Preliminary task,

Preliminary task: Haydon School

Our first preliminary task was to make a front cover and contents page of a magazine about Haydon School.

First we had to go around the school and take a range of photos that were related to Haydon to put them onto the magazine. After we took our photos, we then eliminated the ones we didn’t want and the ones that we did. Before I eliminated the photos, I tried a few out on my magazine to see how they would look, for example if they looked professional or appealed to my target audience.

After I chose my photos, I then began to sketch out my front cover and contents page onto paper. This gave me a rough idea of how I wanted my magazine to look and also gave me different ideas to try for example, when I drew the image I wanted, I then realised that it would look better if it was my background image instead.

I decided to name my magazine ‘Haydon Now!’ to keep it short, then started to design my magazine on Abode Indesign CS6.

Front Cover

I decided to go for my background image of one of the buildings of Haydon School so that it’s straight to the point and not too complex for the readers, it is also easier to read the writing with the simple image in the background. I went for black and white font colours so that it can be readable and stand out clearly and boldly for the readers. Furthermore I added two bubbles in blue, to go with the background image, to grab the target audience’s attention and to intrigue them about the new features of Haydon School. It also makes it look exploding and interesting. Also I named the bubbles ‘Now!’ to go with the title of my magazine.

Contents Page

Then I started on my contents page. I kept the same background image but put a transparency effect on it so it’s faded into the background so it’s easier to read all the writing. Also I added another image in the corner of another building to grab attention of the readers. I used the same font throughout the magazine to keep consistency and I wanted to keep it simple so it is easy to read and doesn’t cause confusion to the readers. I made some of the writing bold or underline to make sure the readers knew that this was the important information and to make sure they saw this first before anything else so they know what’s going on in the magazine.

I also added the same bubbles that were on my front cover but used different information to grab attention and make it exploding.
